1st year students discussed media literacy

Оn October 9, an open educational hour was held at the faculty of Journalism and political science at the L. N. Gumilyov Eurasian National University under the guidance of the head of the Department of printing and publishing Gulmira Ashirbekova for 1st year students of the specialty "Digital media management". The event was organized by the teacher of the Department Zhansaya Akylbek and 2nd year master's student Arailym Murat. 

During the event, students were explained the importance of media literacy in the information society, and studied how to become media literate using specific examples. 

Future journalists studied such terms as "media literacy", "media process", "fact-checking", "cyberbullying", "fake news". Along with this, they compared such concepts as "fact" and "opinion" and learned to understand the difference.

During the educational hour, students were divided into 3 groups. Each of them presented their projects in relation to the information attacks, the dangers of computer games and fake messages. 

The first group chose the theme of online games "Blue whale" and "Silent house", which was discussed a few years ago in the network. The second group spoke about the dangers of computer games and the consequences. The third group analyzed the spread of fake messages in the network and spoke about the importance of such resources as "stopfake.kz", "factcheck.kz".

To consolidate the topic, students performed various exercises that reveal the level of media literacy. So they learned to think critically. Thus, the students understood "the Importance of media literacy in the information society".
