"Changing Bad Media Habits / 50 Tips for Media Literacy"

On February 17, the Eurasian National University launched a project called "Changing Bad Media Habits: 50 Tips for Media Literacy,"  implemented by the public association "Kazakhstan Media Network," with the support of "Internews Europa" and the financial support of the European Union. As a part of this project, a meeting of third-year students of the Faculty of Journalism and Political Science with Baktygul Burabayeva, media expert, media trainer, and co-founder of the public association "KazMediaNetwork" (Kazakhstan Media Network), was held.

The discussion was held on current topics related to media literacy, including cybersecurity, protection from phishing sites, compliance with the rules of network communication, and Internet hygiene. One of the most important topics for future media workers was "fact-checking" and ways to find and check the necessary information on the Internet. Real-life examples were given concerning the substitution of domains of popular bank Internet resources (kaspi.kz and halykbank.kz), cyberbullying, Internet fraud, and the distribution of zombie fakes. The meeting ended with a quiz and a monetary reward for the winning students.

At the meeting, participants actively discussed and solved various tasks and questions related to media literacy and communication in the Internet environment.

In general, the "Changing Bad Media Habits/50 Tips on Media Literacy" project will hold 20 offline and online trainings in all regions and major cities of Kazakhstan for teachers of media and information literacy in schools, 20 quizzes among adults, webinars, and flash mobs of influencers. A media literacy educational platform is also expected to be created with five animated and 10 video clips under the hashtags #tekmediasauat and #tomedialiteracy. "Journalists, media experts, teachers, professors, and students will participate in the project," announced Baktygul Burabayeva.

We would like to thank Ms. B. Burabayeva for her initiative in conducting today's training. Burabayeva, for providing useful information and advice.

We are looking forward to new meetings and trainings!
